Who should pick MyFitnessPal?
- You want the largest possible database, including lots of restaurant dishes.
- You need Android or a website as well as iPhone.
- You want connections to 40+ other apps and trackers, or a community.
Who should pick Tone?
- Logging is the part you always give up on, and you’d rather say a meal than search for each food.
- You want to know which numbers were checked by a person, and where every number came from.
- You drink coffee or energy drinks and want to know how much is still in you at bedtime.
Is MyFitnessPal’s voice logging free?
No. MyFitnessPal’s Voice Log is part of Premium and works in English. Barcode scanning and Meal Scan (photo logging) are Premium too. On the free version you search for foods, and Quick Add is calories only.
Why is MyFitnessPal’s database so big, and does it matter?
Most of MyFitnessPal’s entries are created by its users, which is how it reaches tens of millions. Entries MyFitnessPal has reviewed carry a check mark, and its own help center says unchecked entries aren’t necessarily wrong but can be.
Tone takes the other route: fewer foods, with the common ones checked by a person at Tone, and every food’s page saying where its numbers came from (USDA, the label, or an estimate). When Tone doesn’t know a packaged product, you photograph its label and it’s yours to log straight away.
Can I switch from MyFitnessPal to Tone?
Yes. Tone sets a new plan from your details and goal when you start, and learns the foods you eat as you log them. Scanning your groceries once teaches it the products you usually buy.
